Best Fall Activities in Fergus Falls, Fargo-Moorhead, Detroit Lakes & Surrounding Areas
There is something different about fall in western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota.
The lakes get quieter. The trees turn shades of gold, orange and red. Farmers markets fill with late-season produce, pumpkin patches open for the year, and cool evenings make it a little easier to justify grabbing a warm drink and spending an afternoon outside.
Whether you live here or are planning a weekend trip, there are plenty of ways to enjoy fall throughout Fergus Falls, Fargo-Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, Alexandria and the surrounding Lakes Country communities.
From pumpkin patches and corn mazes to hiking trails, scenic drives and local fall events, here are some of the best things to do in the area this fall.
Fall Activities in Fergus Falls and Otter Tail County
Fergus Falls is a great home base for fall adventures because you can go from downtown shopping and farmers markets to prairie, lakes and hardwood forests within a short drive.
See the Fall Colors at Maplewood State Park
If seeing Minnesota fall colors is at the top of your list, Maplewood State Park near Pelican Rapids deserves a spot on the itinerary.
The park's mix of maple, basswood and oak forest becomes especially colorful in autumn. Visitors can hike, camp, bike on designated routes or take in the scenery along the park's approximately 4.5-mile gravel scenic drive.
For one of the park's signature views, take the short hike to Hallaway Hill, which overlooks South Lida Lake and the surrounding rolling terrain.
Because fall color timing changes from year to year depending on temperature, rainfall and other conditions, check Minnesota's current fall color reports before making the drive.
Spend an Afternoon at a Pumpkin Patch
For a classic Minnesota fall day, head toward Pelican Rapids and Thea's Pumpkin Patch.
The seasonal attraction features an 11-acre corn maze, games, a petting zoo, hayrides, food and pumpkins. Its location south of Pelican Rapids makes it easy to combine a visit with a drive through the Maplewood State Park area.
Another worthwhile fall destination is Otter Berry Farm, located southeast of Perham near New York Mills.
For 2026, the Otter Berry Farm Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch runs September 26 through October 31, primarily on Saturdays and Sundays. The farm features a six-plus-acre corn maze, more than 50 varieties of pumpkins, gourds and squash, farm animals and activities for kids and adults.
Shop the Fergus Falls Farmers Market
Fall is one of the best times to visit the Fergus Falls Farmers Market at Spies Riverfront Park in downtown Fergus Falls.
The 2026 market runs through October, with markets on Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors can shop locally grown produce, baked goods, handmade products and other goods from regional vendors.
It is an easy stop before exploring downtown Fergus Falls or heading out for an afternoon fall drive.
Walk the Prairie Wetlands
For something quieter, head to the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center on the eastern edge of Fergus Falls.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service property includes hundreds of acres of prairie and wetlands and nearly four miles of trails for hiking, birdwatching and wildlife observation.
Fall migration makes the area an especially interesting place to watch birds and experience a landscape that feels completely different from the wooded state parks nearby.
The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset, making Prairie Wetlands an easy outdoor activity that doesn't require committing an entire day.
Take a Fall Day Trip to Black Silos in Wendell
For a fall experience that feels a little different from a traditional pumpkin patch, book a stay at Black Silos Farmstead Getaway in Wendell, Minnesota.
Set on approximately 20 acres of farmstead and lakeside property, Black Silos is known for its renovated silo accommodations and peaceful country setting.
Guests staying at the property can enjoy countryside and lake views, walking trails, campfires and other outdoor activities. The property offers unique lodging options including Stony Brook Cottage and The Starlit Loft.
It can make an especially memorable fall getaway for someone looking to slow down and experience a quieter side of western Minnesota.

Get Lost in a Corn Maze
Lost in the Valley Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from September 11 through October 31, 2026.
The attraction includes a 12-acre corn maze, pumpkin patch and additional fall activities. Special events are also scheduled throughout the season, including select Dazed in the Maze events for guests age 21 and older.
Fargo also has The Great Maze at West Acres, a large seasonal wooden maze that offers a different experience from a traditional corn maze.
The 2026 Great Maze season begins September 19 and runs into early November. Its wooden walking surface also makes it a more accessible option for strollers, wheelchairs and scooters than many traditional cornfield mazes.
Spend a Saturday at the Red River Market
Not everything about fall has to involve pumpkins.
The Red River Market continues Saturdays in downtown Fargo through October 31, 2026.
Located at Broadway Square, the market combines seasonal produce with local food, makers, entertainment and the atmosphere of downtown Fargo. The 2026 outdoor market runs Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Moorhead Farmers Market also continues on Tuesdays through October 27, 2026, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church parking lot.
Together, the two markets give residents and visitors on either side of the Red River plenty of opportunities to shop local as the growing season winds down.
Add a Halloween Event
October brings another round of fall activities to Fargo-Moorhead.
The 2026 calendar includes Boo at the Zoo at the Red River Zoo on October 10, 17 and 24, with trick-or-treat stations, carousel rides, keeper chats and other Halloween activities.
Bonanzaville in West Fargo also hosts paranormal investigation events on select dates throughout October.
That makes Fargo-Moorhead an easy choice if you want to turn a pumpkin-patch afternoon into an entire fall weekend.
Fall Activities in Detroit Lakes and Becker County
Detroit Lakes may be best known for summer at the lake, but fall is one of the area's most scenic seasons.
Fall color in the Detroit Lakes area generally develops from late September into mid-October, although exact timing varies with the weather. Peak color frequently occurs around the end of September or first part of October.
Take a Fall Color Drive
One of the easiest ways to experience autumn around Detroit Lakes is simply to get in the car.
Recommended fall-color routes include drives toward Maplewood State Park, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge and along the Lake Country Scenic Byway on Highway 34, where the landscape transitions from prairie into increasingly wooded lake country.
For anyone new to the area, these drives also provide a great reminder of how quickly the scenery changes once you leave town.
Hike or Bike at Detroit Mountain
Detroit Mountain Recreation Area isn't only a winter destination.
Its trail system provides hiking and mountain biking opportunities during the warmer months, and cooler fall temperatures make it a popular place to get outside and enjoy the changing scenery.
Detroit Mountain is also hosting its Mountain Market on October 10, 2026, adding another fall event to the Detroit Lakes calendar.
Go Apple Picking Near Detroit Lakes
Fall and apples belong together.
Gottenborg Apple Orchard in Audubon, about five miles east of Detroit Lakes, has approximately 8,000 apple trees and specializes in University of Minnesota varieties including Honeycrisp, SweeTango and Zestar.
The orchard opens seasonally beginning in late August, with pre-picked apples available during the season and U-pick offered on weekends.
It can easily become part of a larger Detroit Lakes fall-color drive.
Go Troll Hunting
One of the more unusual things to do around Detroit Lakes is also a great fall activity.
The Trolls in DL experience features five giant trolls and the Golden Rabbit created by internationally known artist Thomas Dambo.
The permanent outdoor exhibition is open in every season when trail conditions are safe and walkable. Visitors who want to follow the full troll adventure can begin at Alexa's Elixir in Detroit Lakes City Park and use the accompanying story and clues to continue the search.
Because several of the sculptures are located in wooded outdoor settings, fall adds another layer to the experience.

Mountain Market takes place October 10 at Detroit Mountain.
Frazee Haunted Forest and Fright Farm is scheduled for October 16 and 17.

Make a Fall Day Trip Out of It
One of the advantages of living in this part of Minnesota and North Dakota is that you don't necessarily need a major vacation to experience fall.
A Saturday can mean a stop at the Fergus Falls Farmers Market followed by a drive through Maplewood State Park. From Fargo, you can visit a pumpkin patch or corn maze in the afternoon and still be downtown for dinner that evening.
Around Detroit Lakes, a fall-color drive can turn into hiking, apple picking or a troll hunt without traveling far from town.
And because Fergus Falls, Fargo-Moorhead and Detroit Lakes are surrounded by smaller lake communities and rural countryside, there is almost always another scenic road, local market or small-town fall event nearby.
When Do Fall Colors Peak Around Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes?
There is no exact date every year.
Temperature, rainfall, frost and other weather conditions all influence when leaves change.
Fall color usually develops from late September into mid-October, with peak conditions often occurring around the first week of October or so.
If fall colors are the main purpose of your trip, check current Minnesota fall-color reports a few days before leaving rather than relying solely on historical peak dates.
