Vergas is a small town with a population of approximately 350, situated in northwestern Minnesota in Ottertail County. Vergas residents have easy access to many other cities since it is located 50 miles from Fargo, ND, 15 miles from Detroit Lakes, and is surrounded by many smaller towns within a 10 mile radius. Known for being the “Home of the World’s Largest Loon,” a 20 foot structure on the shore of Long Lake, Vergas attracts many tourists throughout the summer months. The Vergas Hairyman 5K was put in effect as a fundraiser for the Vergas Long Lake Trail Connection which aims to connect the current Long Lake Trail to the trail formerly known as “Tin Can Alley.” Vergas also hosts the Maple Syrup Festival in the springtime which includes a pancake feed, live music, homemade maple syrup, a 5K walk/run, tapping trees for sap, and shopping deals at local stores. During the summer, Vergas Looney Daze are held which features a parade, street fair, bean bag toss, and 5K walk/run.
